Office of the IMF Resident Representative

Background

The IMF Resident Representative Office in Lebanon opened in January 2008.

In 2006, the authorities, backed by the international community, developed a comprehensive economic reform program (the Paris III agenda) aimed at reconstruction and macroeconomic stabilization.

The reform agenda includes:

  • Fiscal adjustment, related structural measures, and privatization to tackle the large public debt overhang and reinvigorate the economy; and
  • Social sector reforms to alleviate poverty, reduce regional income disparities, and improve education and health indicators.

The IMF supported this agenda through a quarterly monitoring framework and two drawings under the EPCA (Emergency Post-Conflict Assistance) in 2007 and 2008.

Role of the IMF Resident Representative Office

The IMF Resident Representative provides continuity in assisting the development and implementation of economic policies that fall within the IMF’s scope of competence and expertise in Lebanon.

He is the principal representative and the resident spokesperson for the IMF in Lebanon.

The Resident Representative’s main tasks are to:

  • Liaise between the authorities and the IMF, and with other multilateral organizations and bilateral donors;
  • Monitor and report on economic and political developments;
  • Assist visiting IMF missions; and
  • Advise the authorities on economic policies.
