United Nations Liaison Office in Beirut / Israeli-Lebanese Mixed Armistice Commission (UNLOB/ILMAC)
The United Nations Liaison Office in Beirut / Israeli-Lebanese Mixed Armistice Commission (UNLOB/ILMAC) is part of the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) whose headquarters is located in Jerusalem. The mission was established in 1949, making UNTSO the longest established peacekeeping mission in the United Nations. In particular, UNTSO is entrusted with the task of monitoring the cease-fire lines between Israel and the boundary countries, of observing and maintaining the cease fire and assisting the parties in the supervision of the terms of the General Armistice Agreement as specified in Security Council resolution 73 (1949).
At the moment more than 50 UNTSO Military Observers operate in Southern Lebanon as part of Observer Group Lebanon (OGL). UNTSO Military Observers are unarmed Officers and carry out their functions in a spirit of impartiality manning patrol bases, operating mobile teams, conducting patrols and investigations, and carrying out liaison duties with parties active in and around Southern Lebanon. During the last two years 5 UNTSO Observers have been killed and two have been seriously injured while fulfilling their duties in Southern Lebanon.
As a Liaison Office, the Chief of the UN Liaison Office in Beirut (CUNLOB) as representative of the Chief of Staff/Head of Mission of UNTSO has the following tasks:
- conduct liaison with relevant Lebanese Authorities on UNTSO matters;
- maintain contact with ,representatives of the UNTSO troop contributing countries-P5 Member States in Beirut and UN Agencies in Lebanon as necessary.
Chief UNLOB produces security assessments for the UN Designated Official as Military Advisor as required. Chief UNLOB has to be ready to assume the task to chair the Israeli Lebanese Mixed Armistice Commission, on behalf of COS UNTSO, as and when the commission is reactivated.
