With a presence on the ground of 23 UN agencies in Lebanon, the UN is dedicated to assist Lebanon in achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), eight human development targets that the world’s governments adopted in 2000 and pledged to achieve by 2015. With only five years left to the deadline, attaining the MDGs has become a crucial component of the UN’s development work. it is the governments of the world who committed to achieving the MDGs in their countries, it is ordinary people who are the lynchpin of any success in realizing these ambitious targets. The time has come for the world to realize that we all have a role to play to achieve the Goals, and that regardless of where we live or what we do, we all have the potential to contribute to human development in our countries, communities and villages.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called on world leaders to attend a summit this September in New York during the UN General Assembly to boost progress towards the MDGs. The UN system believes it must redouble its efforts to raise awareness on both the progress that has been made toward achieving the Goals, and the great and immediate challenges that lie before us in the course of the next five years.
Because no medium is more direct, more powerful and more intimate than photographs, the UN system in Lebanon is organizing a photo contest, “A Snapshot for Development”, to highlight the importance of the MDGs and the inspirational work that is already being done to achieve them. At a time when the world’s attention will be focused on these issues, the winning photos will put a human face on the MDGs.

Home scary home
The picture portrays a housewife laying in a corner in her house, she looks beaten up and as if she is giving up. The expressions on her face are of desperation and the look in her eyes shows regret and that she is drowning in her thoughts, you wonder what she is thinking about. She also has a look of determination and survival in her eyes

MDG 7 – Ensure Environmental Sustainability

Tree of Life: this photo is taken in Ammiq, West Bekaa. the swamp/pond area is dried, small in size, and bares a lot of dead fish in summer; in winter and spring life comes back again, to fill the pond with water, more space for the new school of fish that is still beating for their life waiting for the rain to come. Hence the Tree of Life, giving birth to the area around it when the time is right.
